About
This first-of-its-kind birthing centre was thoughtfully designed to meet hospital-grade standards while creating a warm, culturally grounded space that supports traditional birthing practices within the community.
Lakeland’s scope of work included a 9,375 square foot handcrafted facility built from locally sourced white spruce logs, plus a surrounding deck, bringing natural materials and craftsmanship to the forefront.
The facility is designed as five interconnected octagonal pods, with the central pod featuring intricate interior log truss work and a striking suspended fireplace as a gathering focal point. Exterior post-and-beam features, custom deck railings, and a cedar log sign structure further reflect the collaborative vision shaped by elders, knowledge keepers, and health professionals alike.
“When we designed the birthing home, we didn’t want it to look like a hospital. We didn’t want it to look cold and sterile, but rather more of a home-like environment, because it’s going to be the first place that our babies see.”
